We are proud to share that Mr. Nitin B. Ravi, Head of Research & Development at TeraLumen Solutions, will be the speaker at the InSIS Monthly Webinar Series (34) – 2026.
Topic: Seeing Between the Layers: Terahertz NDT and AI for Structural Health Monitoring
Date: 30 January 2026 (Friday)
Time: 6:00 PM IST
Abstract:
Terahertz (THz) radiation, spanning 0.1-4 THz, occupies the spectral region between microwaves and infrared. Historically underutilized due to the lack of suitable sources and detectors, THz technology has seen rapid advancements over the past two decades. It is now a proven modality for material evaluation and structural diagnostics. As industries transition from metallic to non-metallic architectures, THz methods offer distinct advantages particularly for dielectric systems. This talk presents non-destructive testing (NDT) of real-world components such as fiber-reinforced composites, honeycomb cores, and thermal barrier coatings, using a custom-built THz imaging platform. The system integrates specialized hardware with analytic software to produce A-, B-, and C-scans, enabling clear visualization of internal defects and precise localization within complex structures. Case studies demonstrate the detection of delamination, debonding, porosity, and thickness variations across diverse material systems. I will also discuss practical limitations, calibration strategies, and deployment considerations for both shop-floor and field environments. These findings position THz imaging as a non-contact, non-ionizing inspection technique that complements ultrasound and X-ray-offering unique sensitivity to polymers, ceramics, and layered assemblies. We conclude with a roadmap for integrating THz NDT into emerging manufacturing workflows, paving the way for next-generation material inspection and quality assurance.
