Terahertz Technology

An Innovative Terahertz-Based Real-Time Tissue Imaging Device for Surgical Guidance

Terahertz Technology

Terahertz region is an unexplored region in the electromagnetic spectrum, and TeraLumen employs its potential to utilize this frequency region to solve real world challenges.  Unlike familiar technologies such as X-rays, infrared (IR), THz waves have unique benefits because of their particular wavelength (0.1- 4 THz).

Sensitive to water content

Terahertz technology is highly sensitive to water content as water absorbs terahertz waves strongly. This sensitivity makes it an effective tool for cancer margin detection, as cancerous tissues often have different water content compared to healthy tissues. By analysing the terahertz radiation absorbed and reflected by tissues, clinicians can more accurately distinguish between malignant and healthy cells, improving the precision of surgical interventions and reducing the likelihood of leaving residual cancerous tissue.

CONCLUSION

TeraLumen’s patented Terahertz technology differentiates cancer verses healthy tissue in real-time. This will allow surgeons to immediately remove additional tissue, helping to reduce second surgeries. Combining Terahertz and Artificial Intelligence, TeraMarginTM help both physicians and patients answer the question, Did we remove everything?’ In addition to the advantages to the patients, the reduction in re-excision rate will provide major savings to health care systems.
